1. Q: How do I Get the color and finish on the antler?
A: The peanut brittle finish is obtained,by taking a torch I have two different ones and parching the antler, slowly and where I want it ,careful not to burn it for the antler will pop the finish off. Then I buff the parched antler until it comes to a beautiful glossy finish. neat huh?

2. Q: Do I call my carvings scrimshaw?
A: No my carvings are more like relief carvings, much deeper than scrimshaw.

3. Q: Do I do cartoons ?
A: No, I don't want to infringe on someones copyright or trademark.Sorry

4. Q: How can you get one of my knives?
A: Well ,If we were face to face cash would work. Money order is good,Check is o.k. takes alittle while, but it still works, barter works if you have something I want. See it's not so hard. I even trade For deer antler. You need to pay for shipping and Insurance,I'll do the boxing and handling.

5. Q: How long does it take to make a knife?
A: I take orders and ask for 4 to 6 weeks. some times, It may not take a week or two,but there can be orders ahead of your order. especially holidays.

6. Q: There was a sample question, What is my favorite food?
A: I think I was Getting hungry, Southern Fried Chicken,Potatoes and gravy, Homemade Biscuits.

7. Q: What images can I carve?
A: Deer faces, Leaping deer,Fish, Longhorn Steers,Buffalo,Dogs,Wolves,Bears, Horses,Covered wagons, Cowboys,Feathers,Indians with war bonnets Crosses,Raccons, Just don't try to find something I can not carve. I'm sure I do some images better than others

8. Q: What is the certificate for, that comes with every Charlie Smith knife?
A: Someday I may be famous, maybe not, even so the certificate of authenticity gives you the proof to that you have an original Charlie Smith knifeand matches up with the numbers on your purchase. Then for resale or just collection purposes this helps. There is no way for me to make a copy, the deer don't even grow the antlers the same every year.

9. Q: Where do I get all the deer antler?
A: Well,I didn't kill the deer. Deer shed their antlers every year and grow new ones. Then some of the deer are harvested, thats nice talk for killed. Those that are harvested will not grow any more, however if removed from the skull, it gives me that little bit more material to work on the little images I carve on the crown.

10. Q: Why do I sign and number my knives the way I do it?
A: Now I'm asking myself the hard questions, but I do get asked these questions. Most artist sign their work, some knifemakers number their knives, some don't.I just put the big S like Zorro "Z" in reverse, then with a little c in it.The numbers are example 3/01 All th knives are one of a kind so, the 3 stands for the third knive in the year 2001 and that is just my way o.k.
