Introducing Charlie Smith and his knives
A Charlie Smith knife begins with a deer-antler handle that has a uniqueness of one of a kind. Charlie carves one, two sometimes three images into the crown end of the antler. Charlie’s art-work continues up the handle side to the guard which is usually brass. The guard sometimes has file work, file work sometimes is used on the blade. The blade is chosen either stainless or maybe Damascus steel. Each knife is truly one of a kind. Each one is numbered and signed by the artist-craftsman. Only recently, Charlie started making some knives without any art-work, this was created for the die–hard hunter that wants a great knife with no art. Then there was the buyer that wanted a Charlie Smith knife, but wanted to hold down the price. In any case, there will not be an inferior knife made. Before and during the process of making the knife Charlie keeps a watchful eye on the gracefulness, the flowing smoothness, and the balance. The handle is usually lightly parched to a mellow golden tone, like peanut brittle, and highly polished to a beautiful shine. Charlie's knives are displayed and mounted on a well thought out stand. Another antler or piece of antler is carved and attached to a carefully selected Manzanita wood slab. Then just because it lends to the knife and the display, a rabbit fur is added making for a finished decorator look, ready to be displayed on your fireplace mantle, on your desk or in your bookcase.
